In-house lab or outside lab: why it matters
Your crowns, veneers or bridge are made by a dental technician, not the dentist. Where that technician works changes your trip.
An in-house laboratory, in the clinic building, can make and adjust crowns, veneers and bridges faster, and the technician can see you in person for colour and shape. An outside laboratory can be just as good, but adjustments may take longer, which matters on a one-week trip. Ask where your work will be made, who makes it, how long it takes and what happens if it needs remaking before you fly home.
The Oral Health Foundation describes how veneers and crowns are made: an impression or scan of your teeth goes to a dental laboratory, where the restoration is made, and then it is checked for fit and colour and fixed. At home there is usually a gap of days or weeks between those appointments. On a trip to Turkey it usually has to happen in days.
In-house laboratory
- Speed. Work can go from scan to try-in in a day or two.
- Adjustments on the spot. If the colour or shape is not right, the technician can change it the same day.
- Meeting the technician. For front teeth, seeing the person who shapes them can help.
- One responsibility. The clinic cannot blame an outside supplier.
Outside laboratory
- Specialist labs can be very skilled, sometimes more than a small clinic’s own team.
- Time. Collection and delivery add hours or days.
- Remakes can be harder to fit into a short trip.
Digital or traditional
Many clinics now scan your teeth digitally instead of taking putty impressions, and design restorations on screen before milling them (CAD/CAM). This is faster and makes remakes easier. Hand layering of porcelain is still used for very natural front teeth.
Questions to ask
- Where will my crowns, veneers or bridge be made?
- Digital scan or impressions?
- How many days from preparation to final fit?
- If something needs remaking, can it be done before my flight?
- Which materials, by name? (Zirconia, E-max, porcelain on metal.)
Why it matters for repairs
If a crown chips a year later, a clinic with its own lab may be able to remake it within a short repair trip. Ask how repairs work. See reading a clinic’s guarantee.
Common questions
Is an in-house lab always better?
No. It is often faster and more convenient. Quality depends on the technicians and materials, wherever they work.
What is CAD/CAM?
Computer-aided design and milling: teeth designed on screen from a digital scan and milled from a block of zirconia or ceramic. Many clinics and labs use it.
Can my crowns be made in the UK instead?
Not usually as part of a Turkish clinic’s treatment. The clinic needs to fit and adjust them.
