Implant manufacturer warranty vs clinic guarantee
Several clinic websites say their implants are “lifetime guaranteed by the brand”. That is usually true, and usually not what patients think it means.
An implant manufacturer’s warranty covers the implant component, typically by supplying a replacement part if it fails under the maker’s conditions. It does not usually pay for the surgery, the crown or bridge, the clinic’s time, or your travel. The clinic’s guarantee is the promise about the work itself. Ask for both, separately, in writing.
On one clinic website in our register you can read that its implants “are lifetime guaranteed by the implant brands”. Another mentions “manufacturer-backed warranties”. Neither statement is wrong. But in both cases we did not give the guarantee point, and this guide explains why.
Two different promises
| Manufacturer warranty | Clinic guarantee | |
|---|---|---|
| Who gives it | The implant maker | The clinic that treats you |
| What it covers | The implant part, under the maker’s conditions | The work: implant, crown or bridge, sometimes related treatment |
| What you usually get | A replacement component | Re-treatment, as the terms say |
| Surgery and labour | Usually not covered | Covered if the terms say so |
| Travel | Not covered | Sometimes, if the terms say so |
| Same at every clinic? | Yes, for the same brand | No, it varies a lot |
Why the difference matters
Imagine an implant fails a year after treatment. If only the manufacturer’s warranty applies, you may get a new implant part, but you still need someone to remove the old one, perhaps graft the bone, place the new one and make a new crown. That work, and your flights, may not be covered.
A clinic guarantee that covers implants with abutment for life, as ours does, is a promise to redo the work. It has conditions too, but it is a different kind of promise.
The Oral Health Foundation adds a further point: implants that are looked after often last a very long time, but there is no lifetime guarantee in nature. Gum disease around an implant (peri-implantitis) can lead to its loss. Most guarantees exclude failures caused by poor cleaning or missed check-ups.
Questions to ask
- Which brand and model of implant will you use? (Write it down.)
- What does the manufacturer’s warranty cover, and how would I claim it?
- Separately, what does your clinic guarantee on the implant and on the crown or bridge, and for how long?
- If the implant fails, is the surgery, any graft and the new crown included?
- Who pays for travel to fix it?
Where brand matters anyway
Even without the warranty question, the brand matters. A UK dentist maintaining your implant needs compatible parts and screwdrivers. A widely used brand is easier to service. That is why “implant brands named” is one of our six checks. See which clinics name theirs in the implant ranking.
Common questions
Does a manufacturer warranty mean my treatment is free if an implant fails?
Usually not. It may provide a new implant part. Surgery, grafting, the new crown and travel are normally outside it unless the clinic’s own guarantee covers them.
How do I use a manufacturer warranty?
Usually through the dentist who placed the implant, who returns the failed part with its records. That is one reason to keep your implant card.
Why don’t you count manufacturer warranties in your guarantee check?
Because the check is about what the clinic itself promises. A manufacturer warranty is the same at every clinic using that brand.
