Travel insurance for dental treatment in Turkey

Ordinary travel insurance is designed for unexpected illness on holiday. A trip for planned treatment is a different thing, and many policies say so.

Short answer

Standard travel insurance often excludes planned medical or dental treatment abroad and its complications. The NHS advises telling your insurer about your plans before you travel. Ask whether your policy covers you on a trip for treatment, whether complications are covered, and whether medical evacuation is included; consider a specialist medical travel policy if not. Note that GOV.UK says the UK GHIC and EHIC are not valid in Turkey.

The NHS treatment abroad checklist is brief on insurance but clear: make sure you have appropriate travel insurance, and tell your insurer about your plans to have treatment abroad. GOV.UK’s advice for Turkey adds that you need cover for local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation, and that UK GHIC and EHIC cards are not valid in Turkey.

Why ordinary policies may not cover you

Most travel policies cover sudden illness or injury on a trip. Many exclude:

  • Trips taken for the purpose of medical or dental treatment.
  • Complications of planned treatment.
  • Elective or cosmetic procedures.

If you buy a normal holiday policy and do not mention the treatment, you may find you have no cover for anything connected with it, and possibly no cover at all.

Questions to ask an insurer

  1. I am travelling to Turkey for dental treatment (say what: implants, crowns). Am I covered for the trip?
  2. Am I covered for complications of that treatment while I am there?
  3. Am I covered for unrelated illness or accidents during the trip?
  4. Is medical evacuation or repatriation included?
  5. Do I need to declare my existing conditions and medicines?
  6. Does cover change for the second trip?

Specialist cover

Some insurers sell policies for medical travel, which can cover complications of planned treatment. Compare what they cover and exclude, especially for dental work.

What insurance will not do

  • Pay for a repair trip months later. That is a matter for the clinic’s guarantee.
  • Cover poor results.
  • Replace your own checks on the clinic.

Ask the clinic too

The Oral Health Foundation suggests asking a clinic abroad whether it has insurance. A clinic’s professional insurance is separate from yours, but it matters if something goes seriously wrong.

Common questions

Does my GHIC card work in Turkey?

No. GOV.UK’s travel advice says the UK Global Health Insurance Card and European Health Insurance Card are not valid in Turkey.

Will my policy pay for a repair trip?

Very unlikely. Repairs are covered, if at all, by the clinic’s guarantee.

Do I need to declare my medical conditions?

Yes. Insurers usually require you to declare existing conditions; failing to can invalidate a policy.
